25 years ago, Hank and Thora Alssema opened a second fishing and camping store in Rockingham (the original store was in Kelmscott, called Carry on Fishing and Camping and they tasked the management of that store to their daughter Alison and son-in-law Phil). Originally called Rockingham Fishing and Camping World, the store took off with flying colours.
Opening with 2 staff, Hank and local fishing guru Paul McKay, the store soon took off and some extra staff were required. So, Ben Knight was employed (now a guru fisherman running his own business, Ningaloo Sport Fishing Charters in Exmouth) and their other son-in-law, Marc Samuels, joined the team also. The store continued to get busier and busier and the stores had to start trading 7 days a week, which was a struggle on family time. It was decided to sell the Kelmscott store and Phil and Alison move to Rockingham and concentrate on helping to make the Rockingham store the best in Australia.
Over the years, the store has been a winner of Rockingham Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, Camping World Store of the Year, and also Australia’s Best Bait and Tackle Store. These awards we are extremely proud of! We have also been a part of our community volunteering at events, helping to fund raise for Malibu School for children with special needs, and being a part of helping to support Mangles Bay Fishing Club with donations.
We pride ourselves on good old fashioned customer service and staff who carry excellent knowledge of the products we sell. We currently employ 15 local team members who are all passionate about the outdoors and focus on customer service.
We are proud of our family owned business and proud to be a part of 2 wonderful buying groups of Camping World and Compleat Angler which help us to have national buying power. You can be assured that our prices are always on point and we are able to match prices although we do constantly try to ensure that we are competitively priced all the time.
